Obama Campaign Kick-Off Draws Large Crowd in Amherst County

Amherst County is excited about re-electing President Obama and the turnout at the Obama Kickoff was excellent.  Alex Stanley is the Coordinator for the Obama/Biden campaign locally.   Enjoy some of the photos from the meeting.

Alex Stanley explains the Amherst County campaign set-up

The differences between the parties has stoked extra interest in this election.   Things bothering voters are Romney's not releasing tax info and his tax dodges offshore and Swiss bank accounts as well as the newly confirmed ultra right wing positions on women's rights.   Many are worried about the republican's desire to end Medicare as we know it and to privatize both Social Security and Medicare.   No one trusts the Romney/Ryan cupon systen to cover senior's medical expenses.  The republican plan to increase tax on the middle class while lowering taxes for the upper 1% is not being received well.   Romney only pays taxes at the 14% rate now and his plans for taxes will lower his contribution to less than 1% (.82 %).   Independents and even republicans are lining up to work for Obama's re-election.

What are the differences between the major political parties?

Dave Burford, Chairman
Amherst County Democrats

The Democratic Party is an alliance of various interest groups where the only thing they have in common is that they really want the government to do something (help the poor, assure women have rights, protect the environment, allow gay rights, welcome legal immigrants, get guns off the streets, shore up social security, fine tune Medicare, support students - education and support unions and workers right to organize, etc.).   They look to the future and want our nation to be better for the children yet to see their first sunrise.

The Republican Party is an alliance of people who generally want to prevent the government from doing those things.   They want you to live your life by their rules.  When your top priority is opposing something rather than supporting something, you are frozen in time and looking back.  Maybe you are a fiscal conservative who doesn't really care about anything but low taxes, thus women's rights, medicare and tutition help for students aren't causes that will cause you to vote Democrat.   You just don't care about anything but your taxes.  Even if you think the religious right is crazy and many republicans do, you're still getting what you want by voting with them.   This is why I believe the republican party has no soul.

Democrats think abortion should be rare, safe and legal.  The decision should be made by the parties involved aided by their husbands or lovers, preachers, Moms and Dads, Doctor and or other persons they trust to consider their best interest.  This is a serious decision and a woman should have complete privacy from intrusive politicans looking over her shoulder.   At a minimun Rape, Incest, Extreme Youth of Mother, Life and or Health of Mother, Doctor's recommendation should be points considered.

Skipper and Alex

Republicans think abortion should be against the law and not allowed for any reason or under any circumstances for any reason.   For them the decision is made by politicians like Todd Akin and Paul Ryan and other right wing religious nut jobs who have no biological or medical knowledge.   It was recently brought to light that these republicans ascribe to the theory that a woman has special sperm killing glands that go into action when she is being raped and shut down her ability to reproduce offspring.   The religious right even has a Doctor who teaches this theory to right wing republicans.   This really stupid Doctor is an adviser to Mitt Romney.

Since Amherst County is so deeply Republican it will be interesting to watch the figures on the coming election to see if Republicans think about what GOP leadership stands for.   Will Amherst County women line up to vote for a party that relegates them to third class status, not much more than farm animals, or will they cast their lot with the Democratic Party?

Will republican taxpayers accept a two tier system that lets the middle class pay the bills whild the upper 1% squeaks by paying almost nothing?    Will Amherst County Republicans vote for a party that says it opposes tuition help for students seeking higher education?    Will Amherst County Republicans wave goodby to Social Security and Medicare and march lockstep with Romney/Ryan into their brave new Ayn Rand world?

It is time to think about the world we leave to our children.   Big companies and Republicans play cigarette companies like games pretending there is no scientific link between polution and temperature changes (smoking and cancer), how long did cigarette companies play that game?   There are definately severe changes in our weather, it is hotter than I've ever seen and I wasn't alive the last time the whole center of the country was beset with a draught that dried up lakes and killed crops.

Republicans have to stop listening to nutjobs like Todd Akin and Paul Ryan and Michelle Bachmann.

Mr. Fitts

BACHMANN CLAIMED THAT CARBON DIOXIDE IS ‘HARMLESS’:

In 2008, a Stanford scientist revealed “direct links” between increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and “increases in human mortality” — globally, he found that as many as “20,000 air-pollution-related deaths per year per degree Celsius may be due to this greenhouse gas.”    The next year, Bachmann, who is not a scientist, said that “carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful.   But there isn’t even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas.”      Unlike Todd Akin, Bachmann is not on the House Science Committee and she expressed no opinion on a woman's body to shut off the reproductive system during rape.

If you elect and are repesented by nutjobs what does that say about you?    John Prine sang "common sense ain't so common anymore" and it has turned out to be true.   Please, GIVE COMMON SENSE A TRY.   Our country and our way of life is at stake.

Mitt Romney says "No one ever asked me for my birth certificate"

Mitt Romney said in a speech today that nobody had ever asked to see his birth certificate and he's right no one has.   Of all the Presidents no one ever asked to see their birth certificate except for Obama's.   Of all the Presidents all have been white men with the exception of Obama.   President Obama has constantly been hounded by birthers for about 4 years even though he has released the long and short forms of his birth certificate.   Officials of the state of Hawaii have certified that Obama was born there and both of the newspapers carried the announcement of his birth.

Still the birthers whine and pretend that there is some conspiracy going on.  These people may not have been born stupid but they have acquired a maximum amount of stupidity along the way.   The subject is not open to debate.   It has been proven that Obana was born in Hawaii.   It has also been proven that birthers are idiots.
If you are still spreading this old and discredited lie YOU are a Idiot.

At this point only the most ignorant and bigoted still adhere to the birther lie.   As you go about your business in Amherst County (anywhere really) make note of the people making birther comments and note who they are.   Avoid trasacting business with them on any level for they are the most ignorant and bigoted and least trust worthy people you will meet.

"Mitt and Paul and I see eye to eye on most issues.    I understand they must hide their true feelings until they get elected.    Paul and I have worked together on eight anti abortion bills that restrict all abortions for any reason.     Mitt and Karl Rove are still funding my Senate race under the table and I shouldn't be talking about that.    I am in the mainstream of the Republican Party. "          Todd Akin

If you enter a store and the clerks and workers are talking this garbage take your business elsewhere.    For myself, personally, I don't like to do business in a store that is playing Rush Limbaugh or Shawn Hannity on the radio.   I just don't like spending my money with openly right wing nut jobs.   If there were a rapist, drug dealer or hate organization member running a business you would avoid them wouldn't you?   These right wing conservative nut jobs are no different.   Don't support things you don't condone.
